TABLE OF CONTENTS

Looking to make visiting your destination more fun for people of all ages? Try setting up a "Scavenger Hunt"!

With Driftscape’s Scavenger Hunts, you can gamify your visitors’ experience to make exploring even more fun and engaging. Scavenger Hunts require visitors to correctly answer a question before they can unlock the next stop. The answers to these questions can be found through objects or signs that are only available during a special event, hidden inside businesses, or using things like landmarks that are always there, and require a user to be on-site to find the correct answer.

Scavenger Hunts are created like tours, except you will also add a question and answer used to unlock the next stop.

This feature can also be used to drive foot traffic to specific locations by requiring visitors to visit every stop along the way to complete the hunt.  You can also spice things up by combining a Scavenger Hunt with our collectible Points and Rewards feature.

What is a Scavenger Hunt?

Scavenger Hunts turn traditional tours into thrilling adventures! Each stop will provide intriguing hints and clever clues to help your visitors find their way to the next stop. Stops can include text, images, videos, and audio, offering a rich and engaging experience for your users.

Use Cases for Scavenger Hunts

Use Case 1: A Scavenger Hunt for a Special Event

Looking to drive engagement for your upcoming St. Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day or Halloween event? How about a scavenger hunt that involves hunting for clues and unlocking each stop along the way by answering fun riddles!

Use Case 2: A Scavenger Hunt to Promote Local Businesses

Are your local businesses hosting special deals and need help driving foot traffic to them? Why not design a scavenger hunt where these stores feature as stops along the hunt! Hide a unique colored heart inside each participating store and make the colors the answers to unlocking each stop along the scavenger hunt!

Use Case 3: A Gamified Tour

Are you looking for a way to make your tours more engaging, or to motivate visitors to visit every stop along the way? Consider creating a scavenger hunt that uses what’s already on site as clues like this one created by the Driftscape team in Toronto’s Liberty Village Neighbourhood

Here is a short video to help you visualize how a Scavenger Hunt works in the Driftscape app from a user perspective.

Get Started: Adding a Scavenger Hunt

Step 1: Access the Driftscape Content Management System [CMS]

Log into the CMS at cms.driftscape.com using your Username/Password credentials.

Note: Your login credentials were shared with you by your Driftscape representative. If you need help logging in, or resetting your credentials, contact your Driftscape rep.

Once logged in, you will see the ‘Organization Content’ screen. If you don’t automatically see this screen, choose ‘ORG CONTENT’ from the header menu located in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

You will see a list of your organizations, Click on the name of the organization to which you would like to add your scavenger hunt.

Choose ‘ADD A Tour’

Step 2: Create a Scavenger Hunt Overview

Enter a ‘Title’ for your Scavenger Hunt. Example “Liberty Village Hunt”

Enter the address or location of the starting point of your scavenger hunt in the ‘Time and Venue’ field.

Enter your written description in the Description field. This is what visitors will see when they view your Scavenger Hunt in Driftscape.

  • A Hunt Overview should explain to your visitors what the hunt is about, how long it may take them to complete it, and the first clue to finding stop 1. It’s recommended that the first stop be very close to, or visible from your Hunt’s start point. This will make unlocking the first stop easy, and help your visitors get the hang of how to navigate your hunt.

  • Example Clue/Hint: Look around for a large red steel sculpture, that’s our first Stop.

  • There are other helpful tools accessible to you within the description box toolbar, such as adding website, email address, and or phone links, formatting your text, and more. For details on these features visit the article on How to Add Written Descriptions to a POI.

IMPORTANT! Add a Category for your Scavenger Hunt. Each Hunt should be assigned to the most relevant category. For example, if your Hunt is a heritage hunt, check the box for the “History” Category. You can assign more than one category to a Hunt when relevant, but we suggest selecting a maximum of two categories. This is an important step as users can filter their mobile app view to show them only those POIs (Points of Interest) that fall under a specific category.

Below the Categories selection section, you will see a number of other fields. Typically, you do not need to do anything with these fields when creating a Hunt.

Here is a brief explanation of the fields below:

  • Visibility: All new Hunts are in Draft mode until their visibility is changed to Public [occurs when you are ready to make your POIs live in the mobile app and interactive map]

  • Allow Discovery Mode: Leave set to ‘Yes’ for Hunt.

  • Quest Type: Leave set to ‘None’ for Hunts.

  • Enable Foreground Notifications: Leave set to ‘Yes’ for Hunts.

  • Starts/Ends: This does not apply to Hunts.

  • Author: If you wish to indicate who wrote the Hunt, you can do it here. Multiple authors are permitted. This field will not be displayed to app users.

  • Copyright: If your Hunt is under copyright, enter that here. This field will not be displayed to app users. If your copyright information needs to be public we recommend adding it to your written description.

  • Attributions: Enter any attributions here. This field will not be displayed to app users.

Note: All fields with a red asterisk [*] are required to complete a Hunt/POI.

Step 3: Map the Location of your Hunt

Switch to the location tab at the top of your screen to map the location of the starting point of your hunt. While mapping the location of your Hunt Stops you have a few options:

  • Select a location on the map: Zoom to the area where your scavenger hunt will be starting and click on the map to place a marker at that specific location.

  • Add an address: You can also use the ‘Geocode an address’ bar below the map to zoom quickly to a specific address and place a marker at that address.

  • Enter the latitude/longitude information

  • Note: To make adjustments to the marker’s position, just drag it to a new location, or click a new spot on the map. Zoom all the way in before placing your marker. Location accuracy matters to users on the ground!

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click ‘ADD’ to add your Hunt Stop to the map and to see what your Scavenger Hunt looks like so far.

Step 4: Add Media

With Driftscape, you can add unlimited images, videos and audio files to your Hunt Overview and Hunt Stops!

A minimum of one image for the Hunt Overview and for each Hunt Stop is recommended.

To add an image, scroll back up to top of the page and click on ‘EDIT MEDIA

Click on ‘ADD A MEDIA ITEM

Under ‘Media Type’ select ‘Image’ since we will add a photo first. Click the ‘Choose File’ button to select the image you want to upload. JPG, PNG, GIF and SVG formats are supported (8MB max). You will need to navigate to the folder on your computer where that image is saved and select it. When you’ve selected your image, click ADD at the bottom of your screen.

To reorder uploaded media files, edit the Media No. of each image or video to your preferred sequence. By default, the media gallery numbers upload starting from 1000 in multiples of 1000, making it easier for you to reorder them or add additional media items in between. If you want your new media item to appear first you could renumber it ‘100’. This will make it display before image 1000, but still leaves you lots of room to add additional images before it. Leaving gaps in your numbering of images (by numbering them 100, 200, 300, etc),  is helpful if you want to insert media in between existing media items later on.

For more details on adding other media types visit our Adding Media To Your Points of Interest article.

Once you’re done adding media click ‘SEE THE POI

Step 5: Adding Hunt Stops

Once your Hunt Overview is ready, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Add a Tour Stop

When adding a Tour Stop, complete the following fields:

  • Stop Order represents the number that each stop is along the hunt. Enter “1” for the first stop along the route in the Stop Order field. You must give Hunt Stops a number; this number will appear on the map marker.

  • Enter a Title - This should be the name of that particular Hunt stop. Example: If the first stop along your hunt takes people to a red bird sculpture you could name the stop “Bird Art”. Note: Do not include the stop number in the title of your Hunt stop, that will be added automatically.

  • Enter a Description - For each hunt stop, add a short description that shares details about the stop: the story behind it, or any other information that seems relevant to that particular stop. At the end of the description box for each Hunt Stop, give your visitors simple clear directions on how to find the next stop along the hunt.

  • Next, go to the bottom of each entry and do the following:

    • Fill in the "Access Key Text": This is the question you'll ask your visitors to unlock that specific stop. For instance, in the example below, the "Access Key Text" for stop 1 is "What color are the birds that are stuck to the sculpture?" Note that you can make use of all of the tools available for the Written Description editing toolbar, including adding images. See How to Add Written Descriptions to a POI. The image below is how the user sees Access Key Text  in the app:

  • Fill in the "Access Key" field: This is the answer your visitors must provide to unlock this stop. In the example, the "Access Key" is "red". This is the answer your visitors need to enter to unlock stop 1.

Helpful Tip: Keep it simple! Ensure your scavenger hunt is simple for visitors to complete once they reach the correct location. At the end of each stop, provide visitors with a clue to find the next stop. For example, to direct visitors to Stop #1 after the overview, you could say, "Keep walking, and when you spot a big sculpture on your left, you're in the right spot!"

Note: the password/access key for password-protected content is NOT case-sensitive.

*For more information about Password-Protected Content, please refer to this article.

Next, map the location of your stop by following the instructions from Step 3. You do not need to give them the exact location of the stop, but an approximate one. For example: For stop 1 you could map the location opposite the street of the actual site.

Once your Hunt Stop is ready, add media to it by following the instructions from Step 4 again but for this Stop.

To continue adding stops along your Hunt, click on “Back to Tour” and repeat the above-noted steps for each of your Hunt Stops.

Step 6: Making Your Hunt Public

Changing the Hunt’s visibility to ‘Public’ means making it live in the app and thus visible to users. This live Hunt will count towards your allocated POI count. If your organization is in ‘Trial’ mode, making it ‘Public’ will only make it visible to members of your own organization to whom permission has been granted.

At the top of the page click ‘EDIT POI’.

Use the ‘Visibility’ dropdown box to change its status from ‘Draft’ to ‘Public’.

At bottom of the screen click on ‘Update’ and you are done Adding a Scavenger Hunt!

Notes:

  • Remember if your organization is in ‘Trial’ mode, making Scavenger Hunts public will only make them visible to individuals from your organization who have been granted access in the Driftscape CMS. This is useful for testing and review purposes.

  • You can make changes to any Scavenger Hunt while it is Public, and your changes will automatically update in the app.

That’s it! You’re ready to go! Feel free to offer a prize to visitors who complete the hunt! You can do this by using our collectible Points and Rewards feature or by embedding a form in the last stop where your visitor would fill in their details so that you can connect with them!
