What is a Quest?
A QUEST is a type of scavenger hunt that can be completed within the Driftscape app. It consists of a series of Quest Stops that appear when a user gets close to the correct location. Typically, a Quest stop will include clues for how to find the NEXT Quest stop.
The most popular way to complete Quests is ‘on location’ using the Augmented Reality Mode to locate Quest Stops, but it is also possible to complete them remotely in Map Mode. Quests are available as part of some Driftscape plans (but are accessible by all app users). If your organization is interested in using Quests, contact support@driftscape.com so that a Quest sub-layer can be created for your organization.
This video shows how your visitors will experience and complete a Quest:
Use Cases for Quests
Use Case 1: Gamify Neighbourhood Exploration
Use Quests to gamify exploring a local neighborhood in a way that is fun and engaging. Your visitors will get to experience the thrill of getting hints when they are on the right track, and the excitement of seeing Quest Stops appear before their eyes in Augmented Reality. After visiting each stop, visitors will receive a clue for where to head next. Unlike our other gamified experiences, your visitors won’t know what route they need to take in advance…so it’s a great way to get people exploring new places!
Use Case 2: Quests for Special Events
You can use a Quest to engage visitors at your next holiday or special event. It can be a ‘stop by stop’ Quest, with visitors uncovering clues to guide them to the next stop as they go…or it can encourage visitors to simply try to find as many hidden Quest Stops as possible. You can further incentivize your visitors to explore even more by combining Quests with Points and Rewards or Contests.
Planning Your Quest
We suggest creating short Quests with approximately 5 stops, with the first Quest stop located very close (less than 50m/150ft) to the starting point.
Each stop should be at least 100m/300ft apart from all other quest stops, and Quest routes should not ‘loop’ nor ‘double back’ if this results in users passing within 100m/300ft of other Quest Stops that are out of the intended order [this is to prevent users from accidentally discovering the end of the Quest before visiting all the stops].
Remember that users could be completing your Quest either [1] in person using Augmented Reality or Map Mode, or [2] remotely using Map Mode. When planning and writing your Quest, try to keep these different user experiences in mind.
Get Started: Adding a Quest
As an example, for the Quest called HIDDEN CAMBRIDGE the main page would look like this:
Here are the steps to be followed to create [as an example] the HIDDEN CAMBRIDGE Quest:
Step 1: Access the Driftscape Content Management System [CMS]
Log into the CMS at cms.driftscape.com using your Username/Password credentials.
Note: Your login credentials were shared with you by your Driftscape representative. If you need help logging in, or to reset your credentials, contact your Driftscape rep.
Once logged in, you will see the ‘Organization Content’ screen. If you don’t automatically see this screen, choose ‘ORG CONTENT’ from the header menu located in the top right-hand corner of the screen.
You will see a list of your organizations, Click on the name of the organization to which you would like to add your Quest.
Step 2: Creating a Quest Starting Point
For our example HIDDEN CAMBRIDGE Quest, please refer to the following screenshots [which reference the steps listed below each screenshot]:
1: Ensure you are working under the ‘Main’ tab
2: Under the ‘Title’ field, enter the name of your Quest.
3: In the ‘Description’ field, present the overview for your Quest. Here’s a sample template of verbiage you can copy/paste and then customize for use in this section:
Welcome to the [NAME OF QUEST] Quest! This Quest begins at [DESCRIBE LOCATION], and has [INSERT NUMBER OF STOPS] stops. [ADD A SENTENCE THAT WILL MAKE THE QUEST SOUND ENTICING].
In order to complete a Quest, you will need to follow the clues you discover to find the next stop.
There are two ways to play, you can go to the Quest start point and explore in person, or you can play from home!
If you’re Questing in person you can find Quest Stops by using the Augmented Reality mode. Go back to the map view, and tap the AR icon at the bottom of your screen. Head to where you think the next stop is, when you get close your phone will buzz to let you know you’re on the right track. It will buzz again to let you know you’ve found a Quest Stop. Tap on the marker to discover your next clue! If you don’t want to use AR, you can use the Questing from home method below.
If you’re Questing from home you can find Quest stops by zooming in on the map from Map Mode. Zoom in to the right area, and a Quest Stop will appear - tap on it to get your next clue. Be sure to switch to satellite mode in your settings, especially if you’re having trouble finding landmarks and quest stops!
Now let’s try finding the first stop! It’s very near the location of this marker - so it should be easy to find. Head to the Quest Start point and find the marker in Augmented Reality Mode, or zoom in on the map to find it. Tap the marker to get your first clue.
Your first clue is at [DESCRIBE LOCATION OF THE FIRST CLUE, IT SHOULD BE WITHIN 50m/150ft OF THIS STARTING QUEST LOCATION] Good Luck!
Click here to start your Quest! [INSERT A DEEPLINK THAT TURNS OFF ALL OTHER ORGANIZATIONS AND ZOOMS IN ON THE QUEST START POINT IN MAP MODE. Once you’ve created the start point in the Quest, contact support@driftscape.com to get the deep link that needs to be embedded into this text].
Scrolling further down the screen, look for the dropdown box entitled ‘Quest Type.’ For all Quest Starting Points, set the ‘Quest Type’ to ‘Quest start.’
Scroll back up to the top of the page, and click on ‘Location’ to change over to that screen…this will allow you to create your desired start point.
Choose to work in ‘Map’ or ‘Satellite’ view.
While mapping the location of your Place you have a few options:
Select a location on the map: Zoom to the area where your Place will be located and click on the map to place a marker at that specific location.
Add an address: You can also use the ‘Geocode an address’ bar below the map to zoom quickly to a specific address and place a marker at that address.
Enter the latitude/longitude information
Note: To make adjustments to the marker’s position, just drag it to a new location, or click a new spot on the map. Zoom all the way in before placing your marker. Location accuracy matters to users on the ground!
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click ‘ADD’ to add your Quest’s starting point.
Step 3: Creating Quest Stops
To create Quest Stops, add a Place, and specify a Location for each Quest Stop using the same process as used to create the Quest’s Starting Point in Step 2. Create the first Quest Stop very close to the Quest Starting Point so that it will be easy for users to find, allowing them to understand how the Quest works without having to hunt extensively for the first stop. Thus it’s recommended to place the first stop less than 50m/150ft away from the Starting Point [for example: at the same intersection as the Starting Point, but on the opposite side of the street].
Create a Place for your first Quest Stop.
Title: All Quest stops should have a title in the following format: [NAME OF QUEST] Stop 1: [NAME OF STOP]. In this example: for the Hidden Cambridge Quest the first stop is to be Otto Julius Klotz…thus the Title of the first stop will be ‘Hidden Cambridge Quest Stop 1: Otto Julius Klotz].
Description:
Enter all the information you’d like to share about this particular POI [Point of Interest]:
Also In this field, include clues to lead users to the next Quest stop:
Also in this field, address users who may have found this Quest Stop by accident:
Insert the following standard text:
Found this by accident? Click to learn more about this Quest or to start from the beginning.
[INSERT INTERNAL DEEP LINK TO THE QUEST START - documented below or contact support@driftscape.com]
The Internal Deep Link to be inserted in text above should be: https://www.driftscape.com/mobileappdeeplink?driftscape_action=open_feature&driftscape_feature_uuid=(paste your Quest Start Point UUID here)
To find your Quest Start Point UUID: click on the Quest Start Point POI in the CMS; within the URL bar look for the code “POI&ID=” followed by a unique 6 digit number [this 6 digit number is the unique identifier/UUID for your Quest Start Point]; add only this 6 digit number into the link above
Add an option for the user to reveal a ‘Hint’ that will allow the user to easily move on to the next Quest Stop. Always add this hint using the ‘Read More’ feature. To add a hint, use the ‘Add horizontal line’ icon in the toolbar at the top of the Description field:
Note: Everything below the horizontal line will only appear after the Read More button is tapped.
Insert the following standard text at the bottom:
Need a Hint? Click Read More below.
Make your hints really easy - you’re basically just telling the user where to go next. Provide a super-obvious hint that will allow the user to easily move on to the next Quest Stop:
You should also include images to accompany your Quest Stop. In addition to a main image that will appear at the top of your Quest Stop, you can also include additional images as part of the clue in the description as well as under the ‘Need a hint?’ section.
For all Quest Stops, set the ‘Allow Discovery Mode’ dropdown box to No.
For all Quest Stops, set the ‘Quest Type’ dropdown box to With hints.
Continue adding stops with clues to guide users to the next stop on your Quest.
On the final Quest Stop, insert the following standard text to the end of the Description field:
Keep Exploring in Driftscape! [INSERT THIS INTERNAL DEEPLINK - https://www.driftscape.com/mobileappdeeplink?driftscape_action=show_all - TO TURN ALL CONTENT BACK ON].
For all Quest Stops, set the ‘Quest Start Reference’ field. A quest start reference field helps the app identify which Quest your Quest stops are related to. By setting this field, it will prevent the quest stop from accidentally being discovered in map and AR mode unless the user has previously opened the matching Quest start POI. By default, this field is not set, which means that the quest stop can be discovered at any time by users.
