What are Contests?

Contests that your visitors and users can enter are a great way to further engage them with your content. You can have a contest to vote for your favorite Point of Interest, a contest that enables visitors to enter a draw for a prize, or a contest with a list of Multiple Voting Options.

Create contests in Driftscape which are fully managed, and which include automated reports so that you can review the results.

Examples of Use Cases/Contest Types

POI Voting Contest

Use this type of contest to have participants vote for their favorite Point of Interest from your organization, such as the ‘best restaurant’ or ‘favorite attraction.’

Prize Draw Contest

Use this type of contest to encourage participants to enter a draw to win a prize.

A good way to add this type of contest is to add an Event for it.

List of Voting Options Contest

Use this type of contest to allow participants to pick a choice from a list of voting options.

A good way to add this type of contest is to add an Event for it.

Getting Started: Creating a Contest

Step 1: How to Create your Contest Data

Your contest is defined in a Contest Generator spreadsheet template that we supply to you.

Start by making a copy of this Contest Generator spreadsheet template.

A contest will have one or more rows defined for it, depending on the format of the contest.

Step 2: Column input data

• Contest name: this is displayed to the entrant at the top of the voting form. Keep it fairly short.

• Contest details: this is displayed to the entrant below the top title. Only enter plain text (not formatted text). You can add blank lines for separate paragraphs (CTL-enter key). You can enter as much text as you want to inform the entrant of the details.

• Choices: if you want to create a contest with a selection field from a list of options, enter them here (otherwise, leave this blank). Separate the options with commas. Do not add spaces after the commas.

• Requires email: set to ‘yes’ to cause an email field to be displayed, which the entrant must fill in.

• Requires name: set to ‘yes’ to cause a phone number field to be displayed, which the entrant must fill in.

• Requires phone: set to ‘yes’ to cause a name field to be displayed, which the entrant must fill in.

• Start date: an optional start date for the contest. If supplied and the user tries to enter the contest before this date, they will not be entered and an error is displayed.

• End date: an optional end date for the contest. If supplied and the user tries to enter the contest after this date, they will not be entered and an error is displayed.

• Day range: Leave this unset/empty to mean that a user can only ever enter this contest once. Otherwise, set to the number of days that must elapse before then can enter again. For example, you can set this to ‘7’ to mean people can enter weekly.

• Contest id: ignore this column. After you have filled in your contest details and provided your sheet to your Driftscape representative, they will enter the data into our system for you, then fill in this field.

• POI UUID: ignore this field. It is not required.

• POI name: if this is a voting contest for a POI, then enter the POI name here. Otherwise, leave this field blank. For POI voting contests, duplicate the first row for each POI, changing the POI name accordingly.

Step 3: Output data

The gray columns are computed from the input data, which you can use to populate into the CMS POIs. Generally, you can ignore these fields, as they are used by your Driftscape support representative. But, advanced users can use this data to edit their POIs.

• Vote POI URL: If you want to add a POI voting link into your CMS POI content yourself, use this special URL. This URL only works inside CMS POIs: you cannot use this URL outside of the CMS. If you want to promote your contests outside of Driftscape content (social media, email, web), use a deep link to the POI. You will notice that there is a special "__DRIFTSCAPE_LOYALTY_PARAMETER_APP_ID__" parameter in the URL, which Driftscape apps replace with a securely encoded unique user id. This ensures that a user of the app (mobile or web) cannot abuse contest re-entry.

• Vote POI HTML code: this is some default HTML code to add a voting button to the CMS POI. To add it to a POI:

  • Edit the POI in the CMS.

  • Click the ‘Source’ button to view the HTML source code for the POI.

  • Scroll to the bottom or where you want the voting button inserted, and paste this HTML code exactly.

  • Switch back to Source mode, to view the changed content.

  • Update the POI, and confirm the button was added as expected.

  • You can then refresh the mobile or Driftscape for Web, and try out the contest.

  • A default button image is used, but you can change the image URL to something else if you have a different image you want to use.

• Enter contest URL:  If you want to add a contest link into your CMS POI content yourself, use this special URL. This URL only works inside CMS POIs: you cannot use this URL outside of the CMS. See above for promoting contests outside of Driftscape.

• Enter contest HTML code: this is some default HTML code to add a contest button to a POI (see above for edit details).

How to Utilize your Contest Reports

The spreadsheet column ‘Contest report’ contains a link for organizations to view their contest results:

Report fields

• Date: date the entry was made.

• Entrant id: a unique user id. This is generated by the mobile app and Driftscape for Web.

• Name: if the contest requires a name, then this is what the user entered.

• Email: if the contest requires an email address, then this is what the user entered.

• Phone: if the contest requires a phone number, then this is what the user entered.

• Choice: if the contest is a POI voting contest, then this is the name of the POI. If this is a contest with a voting option, then this is the option the entrant selected. Otherwise, it will be empty.

How to Download Data

Click on the ‘Download data’ button [upper right corner] to download the report data to a CSV file suitable for uploading into a spreadsheet. You can then use that data to view and assess the results [which, for example, will allow you to select a winner].

How to Clear Contest Data

Click on the ‘Clear contest data’ button [upper left corner] to clear all of the contest entries to date. WARNING: be very careful using this feature, as it cannot be undone! Use this during testing and setup, so you can re-enter a contest to test it.
