What is a Custom Menu?

A Custom Menu allows you to tailor the Driftscape app’s navigation to reflect your destination’s needs, ensuring seamless usability for your visitors.  Organize your content in a way that’s intuitive and relevant for your visitors, as you can highlight key attractions or resources with ease.  In short, your visitors will have an easy way to navigate your content within the mobile and web apps. Your menu can also link to external resources, like your website, social media feeds and more. 

You can even direct your visitors to your custom menu directly with a custom ‘open_org’ deeplink (here’s an example for ‘Yukon Sites And Sights’):

What is the Custom Menu Editor?

The Custom Menu Editor is the tool within the CMS (Content Management System) that allows you to edit and maintain your own Organization menus. It can be found under Org Properties.

Getting Started and Best Practices 

Your custom menu will predominantly be used to help your visitors navigate your content within the Driftscape mobile and web apps, but it can also be used to link to external resources.

When linking to content within Driftscape, endpoints can be Sub layers, individual POIs, and search filters (tags). We recommend that at a minimum, each of your Sub layers should have a corresponding menu item. You can also use your Custom Menu to link to external sources, such as your website or social media feeds. We recommend that all of these external links be placed under a ‘More’ or ‘About Us’ Sub Menu located at the bottom of your main menu.

You can specify the following for your Custom Menu:

• Menu structure and endpoints

• Background image (optional)

• Menu Item icons (optional)

• Menu item colours

How to Create a Custom Menu for your Organization

Step 1: Access the Driftscape Content Management System (CMS)

• Log into the CMS at cms.driftscape.com using your Username/Password credentials.

  • Note: Your login credentials were shared with you by your Driftscape representative. If you need help logging in, or to reset your credentials, contact your Driftscape rep.

• Choose ‘ORG PROPERTIES’ from the menu at the top of the screen:

• Choose the pencil icon under the ‘Edit’ column that aligns with the Organization for which you will be creating a Custom Menu (in this example, Visit Driftscapeville):

• This will open up the EDIT Organization screen…scrolling down, the Custom Menu Editor can be located along with its associated ‘Expand’ action button:

Step 2: Create Menu

• Click on the ‘Expand’ action button to reveal the ‘Create Menu’ option (the ‘Expand’ action button changes to ‘Collapse’ to reverse the menu expansion):

• Click anywhere in the ‘Create Menu’ yellow box to get started. You will see the following on your screen. Fill in the fields as described below this screenshot:

Menu Version - leave set to ‘1’ (Menu Versions are not in use at this time)

Background Image - choose a background image for your menu. Note that the image will be displayed behind your menu items, so don’t choose an image with text. Images that are portrait orientation are recommended. Use a fairly large image, since the image will be scaled to fit your menu.

Menu Item Background Color - select a colour for the background of the menu items. This will set a default color for all of the items in your menu, but can be overridden for individual menu items if you wish.

Menu Item Font Color - select a font colour for your menu items. This will set a default color for the font in all of the items in your menu, but can be overridden for individual menu items if you wish.

• Click ‘Create Menu’.  You will now see two options:

• Edit Menu Setup (this can be used to edit the parameters you set when you created the Menu)

• Add a Menu Item

Step 3: Add a Menu Item

• Click Add a Menu Item. You will see the following on your screen. Fill in the fields as described below this screenshot:

Menu Item Name - add the name of your menu item

Menu Item URL - add the URL you would like this menu item to go to when clicked. 

• If your Menu Item corresponds to a Sub-Layer, leave this field blank for now, and use the “Create deeplink URL from icon organization” button after you have selected the icon for that organization.
• If your Menu Item will lead to a Sub Menu, leave this field blank.
• If you are linking to content within Driftscape that is not a Sub-Layer, use a deeplink. See Generate Deep Links to Your Content.

Open in New Tab - leave set to NO if you are linking to content within Driftscape. If you are linking to external content, set to YES. 

Icon - upload an Icon for your Menu Item. Or if your menu item corresponds to a Sub-Layer, select one from the ‘Use Icon from Existing Organization’ dropdown below.

Use Icon from Existing Organization - if your Menu Item corresponds to a Sub-Layer, select the name of the Sub-Layer from the dropdown list to select a matching icon.

Create deeplink URL from icon organization - if your Menu Item corresponds to a Sub-Layer, use this button to automatically generate the deeplink for your Menu Item. This will generate the ‘Menu Item URL’ in the field above. Note that you must have selected the Icon that corresponds to your Sub-Layer before you can create a deeplink.

Menu Background Color - change the color here only if you want to override the settings you made for the entire menu.

Menu Font Color - change the color here only if you want to override the settings you made for the entire menu.

Create a Sub Menu? - If you want this menu item to lead to a Sub Menu, set to Yes. One example might be if you want to create a “More” Menu item that leads to a Sub Menu containing links to (for example) facebook, instagram, your website (or other external links).

• Click ‘ADD’.

• Repeat to add more menu items. It’s recommended to create a menu item for each of your Sub-layers. You may choose to add additional Menu items to highlight specific content within the app.

Here’s an example of the Custom Menu in progress.  As you add Menu items, you will see them here:

Note the up/down arrows to the left of the Menu items. Drag these arrows to reorder your menu items.

Step 4: Add a Sub Menu

• Click Add a Menu Item. This time when filling out the fields, we will set ‘Create a Sub Menu’ to 'Yes' which will enable us to add Sub Menu items. Leave ‘Menu Item URL’ blank when creating a Sub Menu.

Now here is the resulting Menu so far. Note the arrow on the “About Us” item that we just created. This indicates that this Menu Item leads to a Sub Menu:

• Now click the arrow on the “About Us” item to add items to this Sub Menu.

• To now create a Sub Menu to the ‘About Us’ menu, click on ‘Add a Menu Item.' You will see the following on your screen. Fill in the fields as described below this screenshot:

Menu Item Name - add the name of your Sub Menu item

Menu Item URL - add the URL you would like this menu item to go to when clicked. 

• If your Menu Item corresponds to a Sub-Layer, leave this field blank for now, and use the “Create deeplink URL from icon organization” button after you have selected the icon for that organization.

• If your Menu Item will lead to a Sub Menu, leave this field blank.

• If you are linking to content within Driftscape that is not a Sub-Layer, use a deeplink. See Generate Deep Links to Your Content.

Open in New Tab - leave set to NO if you are linking to content within Driftscape. If you are linking to external content, set to YES.

Create a Sub Menu? - If you want this menu item to lead to a Sub Menu, set to Yes. It is not recommended to create a Sub Menu from a Sub Menu.

• Click ‘ADD’.

• Repeat to add more Sub Menu items.

Notes:

• It is not recommended to edit the “Custom Menu Source Code” field directly. This is the saved input and output of the menu editor that defines your menu.

• It is not recommended to create a Sub Menu from a Sub Menu. But, you can create any hierarchy that you want.

• Your Organization Description and Logo will be displayed at the top of your Custom Menu.

• It is possible to add your Custom Menu to so that it appears at a different location within the organization details. While this is not generally recommended, it is possible to do by adding the following HTML code into the Source Code for the Organization Description where you would like the menu to appear:
